A plumbing van crashed off Cobham Drive in Hamilton.

It appeared the van failed to take the 35kmh corner onto the Cobham Dr bridge heading east, Senior Sergeant Pete van de Wetering said.

"The plumber's van has gone off the road and through a barrier, and flipped onto its lid on the side of a bank.

"It's lucky there was no second party involved."

The van landed on a popular walking path beside the Waikato River.

The van landed on a popular walking path beside the Waikato River.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on the southern side of the river at 5.50am.

The van landed just metres from the bank that leads to the river's edge.

It also took out a street light leaving wires exposed, Northern Fire Communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said.

"Power authorities are there, working on the street light."
