Driver left upside down after plumbing van flips off Hamilton road
A plumbing van has ploughed off the road and flipped to land on its roof on a grassy bank edging the Waikato River.
The driver was initially trapped, hanging upside down in the work van that smashed through a barrier off Cobham Dr, Hamilton, on Wednesday morning.
After being freed, he was taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance with moderate injuries.
It appeared the van failed to take the 35kmh corner onto the Cobham Dr bridge heading east, Senior Sergeant Pete van de Wetering said.
"The plumber's van has gone off the road and through a barrier, and flipped onto its lid on the side of a bank.
"It's lucky there was no second party involved."
Emergency services rushed to the scene on the southern side of the river at 5.50am.
The van landed just metres from the bank that leads to the river's edge.
It also took out a street light leaving wires exposed, Northern Fire Communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said.
"Power authorities are there, working on the street light."
The crash was not blocking traffic, but Van De Wetering advised motorists to slow down and drive with care around the scene.
