One person has been killed in a serious road smash south of Hamilton after a van rolled, a car burst into flames and a person went underneath the vehicle.

State Highway 3 is now closed and traffic is being diverted.

Northern fire communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said the call came in just after 3pm.

Fire appliances from Te Awamutu and Hamilton responded to the incident on Ohaupo Rd. Details were still coming to hand, but Mr Phillips said they understand a van rolled in front of a car and a person has gone under a vehicle.

''I don't know how far out of the city it is but apparently a van has rolled in front of a car and a person's gone under the car and the car's on fire - it doesn't sounds too flash."

Earlier this afternoon a driver veered off  the road southwest of Hamilton this afternoon and had to be cut free of the wreckage.

Emergency services responded to the scene of a on State Highway 39, about 2km south of the intersection with Tuhikaramea Rd, at about 1.40pm.

Mr Phillips said a single car drove off the road into a paddock.

The driver was trapped in the wreckage and the fire service used the jaws of life to cut off one side of the vehicle to tend to the patient.

It's understood the driver suffered serious injuries.

Too elitist

Ticket prices were too high

A gala ball is an outdated celebration

I thought it was a great idea

I don't care about the city's 150th celebrations

I didn't know about it
