Prime Minister John Key knows the way to the Waikato's heart.

The rugby tragic PM has tipped the mighty Chiefs to win this Saturday's Super Rugby semi-final clashwith some other team calling themselves the Crusaders.

When doorstopped in Hamilton today by Fairfax's Aaron Leaman, Key confidently predicted the Chiefs would triumph.

''Look I reckon the Chiefs will be hard to beat here. You know, they are at home (in front of) a very parochial crowd,'' he said.

''I mean I know all the money will be on the Crusaders because of the way they played at the weekend but I think the Chiefs might sneak home.''
