A male Hamilton high school student, 17, has admitted to police he was the creator of the 'hot or not' website used student ID photos sourced from the Hamilton Girls' High School website.
The student told police was an IT experiment that got out of hand, Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Patterson said.
Within 12 hours the site had received more than 300,000 hits so he decided to take the site off line.
Hamilton Girls' High Principal Marie Gordon said she was pleased that the person responsible had been identified quickly and that most importantly, the site was no longer live.
The student is now helping police with their investigation to resolve the incident.
