Fertiliser spill stops traffic near Tirau
Urea fertiliser splattered across the State Highway 1 and stopped traffic when a freight truck tipped near Tirau this morning.
Emergency services responded to the scene just south of the town, near the railway overbridge, at 10.30am.
Northern fire service communications manager Scott Osmond said the incident wasn't serious in terms of injury, however ''there were bags of urea fertiliser all over the road, apparently, and we're just assisting with the cleanup.''
Mr Osmond could not say how large the freight truck was or when the road was likely to be cleared.
Northern police communications manager, Inspector Cornell Kouessien said the clean up was put on hold as specialist contractors were needed because the fertiliser could not be allowed to enter waterways..
A short diversion is in place for motorists.
