Drivers will soon pay more to park in the Garden Place car park.
The daily charge will rise from $6.50 to $8 from October 14.
Hamilton City Council says the rate hike is needed because more people will be driving to and parking in the central business district in the wake of the opening of the redeveloped CentrePlace shopping centre and adjacent cinema complex.
"We are raising the price of longer-duration parking to ensure there is more space in the Garden Place carpark for visitors coming to shop in the central city,'' Transportation Manager Phil Consedine said.
"People wanting longer-duration parking in the city centre are also very important and Council will lower the price of parking at the Knox Street carpark to provide a good alternative to them. Knox Street has the added advantage of the free city shuttle bus service to link with other parts of the city centre.
"This change is very important for the vitality of the central city and reinforces the main purpose of the Garden Park carpark which is for shoppers.''
The Knox St car park's daily rate is moving from $6 to $5.
