Former The Block NZ contestant Richard Boobyer is turning heads with his landscape design thanks to attention to detail and simple yet creative ideas.
A gabion water feature, bar leaner, and vertical herb garden made from recycled materials are just a few pieces of Mr Boobyer's courtyard design that saw him take home a gold medal for best in show at the Waikato Home & Garden Show on Thursday.
The 25-year-old Hamiltonian was thrilled to take top place in the 2013 NZ Landscape Design Awards for his courtyard, which he said "offered a practical, modern twist for the busy couple who don't have a lot of time, but want to enjoy their outdoor space with friends".
Mr Boobyer, who has a diploma in landscape design and made his debut in the competition last year, is still in the running for the People's Choice Award to be announced on tomorrow.
"I'm feeling fairly confident," he said. "I won it last year so I hope I can take it out again."
Mr Boobyer, whose design followed the sustainable theme for the competition, was commended for his outstanding workmanship and attention to detail, subtle use of colour, and key features which pulled the space together.
"What I pride myself on is getting it right," he said. "Keeping it fairly simple, but having those ‘wow' pieces."
Among the competition were Wintec students and a group of arborists that Mr Boobyer said were "giving landscaping a go".
"Us young guys have great new ideas," he said.
He believed his time on The Block NZ had helped him better understand costing and time management, something he said was especially important in the competition because they only had 10 days to complete their design.
"You always learn things along the way," he said.
The New Zealand Landscape Design Awards have been part of the Waikato Home & Garden Show for more than 20 years.
The show opens at 10am today and runs until tomorrow. It is open until 6pm daily. Entry costs $16 for adults, while children under 16 are free.
