Police have warned north Waikato residents to be careful with reports a ginger-haired man with an English accent is posing as a Sky Television technician.
A man wearing a Sky TV shirt and driving a white van went to a Te Wiata Ln, Ngaruawahia, home about last Wednesday and told the occupant he was there to check her Sky reception, police said.
Despite the woman telling the man she was unwell, he barged in, grabbed the television remote control and turned the set on.
The man walked outside and began photographing the Sky dish on the roof of the house before going back to his van and sitting in it for several minutes and then driving off.
"The family thought it odd behaviour as they hadn't called Sky about any fault and the man didn't have any identification with him, though he was wearing a Sky shirt and had a clipboard with him," Senior Sergeant Gill Meadows of north Waikato police said.
Police and the family contacted Sky, who have no record of a workman or a technician being sent to the address, he said.
They suspect the man may have been checking out the home as a potential burglary target.
"To that end we want people in the area to be wary of any unsolicited tradesman's visits," Sgt Meadows said.
Anyone with information on who the mysterious technician may have been should Huntly Police 07 858 6200 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
