The truck and trailer rolled on State Highway 27 at Ngarua, between Matamata and Morrinsville, just before 10pm on Monday.

A major highway through the Waikato was down to one lane for five hours after a truck lost a load of frozen goods.

The truck and trailer unit was carrying frozen produce when it rolled on State Highway 27 at Ngarua, between Matamata and Morrinsville, just before 10pm on Monday.

Scattered frozen goods littered the road and the truck ended up blocking one lane, Waikato police Senior Sergeant Ray Malcolmson said.

"It took a long time to right the truck and so the highway was down to one lane ... for about five or six hours ... luckily it was a Monday night."

Malcolmson said the driver managed to escape with minor injuries and was taken through to hospital by ambulance.

Morrinsville firefighters arrived to find the truck on its side and helped to direct traffic until police took over, Northern Fire Communications shift manager Megan Ruru said.

It took more than five hours to right the truck and remove it from the highway, which by Tuesday morning was open to both lanes again.
