A fully-laden semi trailer truck smashed through the Welcome to Ngaruawahia sign and ploughed through a fence into a paddock this morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene at the intersection of Great South Rd and Croall Cres about 7.30am but the driver escaped injury.

The refrigerated unit full of produce was en route to Hamilton at the time, constable Charlotte McRoberts said.

''The truck has veered off the road and investigations are underway to find out why that has taken place,'' she said.

''The driver is fine. A couple of bumps and bruises but he's fine.''

The Welcome sign was knocked onto the verge about 50 metres away before the truck veered off to the left. The semi trailer was labelled 'Shane Boesch of Boesch Transport Ltd'.

The truck was to be dragged out and towed, and the produce was also to be transferred into another vehicle, Ms McRoberts said.
