A 19-year-old man will appear at Tauranga District Court tomorrow charged with murder after man was found shot dead after a party in the small seaside settlement of Maketu.
Police said a 46-year-old Maketu man was found by two people about 1.45am after they heard there had been an incident in the Beach Rd park in the town just south of Tauranga.
Police were this morning questioning a 19-year-old man they picked up after stopping a vehicle near the scene and this afternoon confirmed they had laid charges.
They also have recovered a firearm from a local address.
They said the dead man and the 19-year-old knew each other and were both at a Maketu party earlier in the evening.
Police were today carrying out forensic examinations and other inquiries in the area. A post mortem will be carried out tomorrow.
The victim will not be identified until police have notified his next of kin.
Police were continuing their scene examinations and were keen to
hear from anyone with information about the death, particularly people who heard gunshots or were able to assist police with the exact time the incident occurred.
