About 350 kilogrammes of strawberries are holed up and waiting to be sold at the Purunui Berries farm at Newstead.
State Highway 1B was blocked off by a road crash at 7.45 am this morning. However, berry workers who had turned up for work at 5am had already begun the harvest for the day in preparation for a pre-Christmas rush.
Owner Raewyn Matthew said customers are being allowed through the police road block if they say they are heading to the berry farm bu customer numbers are only about one tenth of what they would usually be for this time of year.
Purunui Berries would have plenty of stock available tomorrow, she said.
