Merry Christmas Waikato, sorry about the rain
And it's such nice weather (if you're a penguin)
The Waikato has woken up to a not-so-welcome Christmas presents from the weather gods today - rain, and plenty of it.
The grey skies that had hovered over the region on Christmas Eve opened overnight and rain began to fall from the early hours of the morning.
The deluge is expected to ease to a few showers in the morning, with a southwest change expected.
And there is no chance of Hamilton reaching anywhere near last Christmas Day's record temperature of 26.2 degrees Celsius. Today the mercury will struggle to nudge 21D.
Boxing Day will be no better, with showers forecast mainly for the afternoon as a westerly turns southerly.
Meanwhile, Hamilton's ducks (and penguins, if we had any) are loving the weather.
Santa Claus, who had been asked time and time again for a nice sunny day, is not returning our calls for comment.
But on behalf of the entire Waikato we would ask him to do better next year because being stuck indoors with grumpy relatives and children who have eaten too much sugar is no fun at all.
