Six people have been sent to hospital after a car crash on the Coromandel Peninsula.
Emergency services were called to the scene on Tairua Whitianga Rd around 12.45pm. Police said the car had gone off the road and down a bank.
Two children and four adults were involved in the crash, and one of them was trapped in the wreckage.
The road has been opened, but has limited access, said Inspector Shawn Rutene. People travelling between Tairua and Whitianga should expect delay.
Police are warning of further pockets of congestion as far north as Waiouru on State Highway 1.
A rescue helicopter based in Whitianga has been called to the scene.
