A driver who fled the scene after hitting a power pole has turned himself in, Waikato police say.

The crash occurred on Ralph Street in Huntly on Saturday night and left live wires dangling over the Huntly Fire Station's rear entrance.

Video footage showed the driver fleeing the scene.

Yesterday a man handed himself in, police said.

"Following media coverage over recent days a 41-year-old man handed himself in to the Huntly Police Station this afternoon after relatives realised he was the person responsible," Sergeant Neil Mansill said.

"This positive result reflects very well on Huntly's good community spirit and the driver is now helping police with their enquiries."
