A Palmerston North woman who drowned at a motel pool in Tauranga has been named.

Catherine Michelle Hintz, 41, was resuscitated Tuesday afternoon after falling into the a Greerton motel's pool but died overnight in Tauranga Hospital.

St John territory manager Ross Clarke says Mz Hintz was resuscitated and transported to Tauranga Hospital yesterday in a serious condition.

It was believed she was found lying in a thermal pool at Greerton's Cameron Thermal Motel about 4.30pm.

"There was an attempted resuscitation and then she was transported to hospital," Ross said.

Tauranga Police Acting Senior Sergeant Cam Anderson said there was nothing suspicious at the scene but police will investigate how she came to be lying in the bottom of the pool.

"We know the cause of death - that's pretty obvious - but the reasons why she's ended up at the bottom of the pool, whether she had a medical issue or not will be looked at.

"She was revived at the scene but she wasn't a very well lady as a result of being underwater for so long and unfortunately she passed away late last night at Tauranga Hospital."

An owner of the Cameron Thermal Motel declined to comment to SunLive today.
