The motorcyclist killed in an accident last night in Taupiri was foreign, say police.

The crash happened about 10pm last night when a motorcycle collided with a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction on SH1 in the Taupiri area.

Senior sergeant Rupert Friend from the district command centre said inquiries were ongoing into the man's identity, but may take longer than usual.

"At this stage we are still trying to confirm his ID. We have a good idea who he is but the delay is because he comes from overseas, so we need to track down his next of kin."

Mr Friend said the occupants of the car involved in the smash were not injured.

"I'm not aware of any other injuries at all."
