Search and rescue teams looking for a missing fisherman have found a body in the Kauri Point area of Bay of Plenty.

A police spokesperson said the body was discovered around 11am and has not been confirmed as Peato Samele Illalio who went missing while fishing from the Kauri point wharf on January 2.

He was last seen jumping off the wharf to retrieve a fishing rod after he thought he had a stingray on his line.

After being towed into deeper water by the animal, Ilalio got into difficulty and disappeared about 200 metres from the wharf.

Police search and rescue teams, with support from the Waihi Beach Coast Guard, the navy and the public had been searching the area for three days.

His family members had kept a vigil at the Kauri Point jetty.

Ilalio is father to a young daughter.
