Jug attack charges upgraded
A Hamilton man accused of smashing a heavy glass jug over the head of a Hamilton businessman has had his charge upgraded.
Lepa Palu, 23, originally faced a charge of wounding with reckless disregard after the alleged attack on Trevor Cochrane at the Still Working Bar in Chartwell on December 20, 2013.
Mr Cochrane was left critically injured after immediately dropping to the ground unconscious and undergoing surgery the following day to ease pressure on his brain.
Mr Cochrane spent time in Auckland and Waikato hospitals but is now recovering at home.
In the Hamilton District Court yesterday, police laid the more serious charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Palu's lawyer James Gurnick tried to relax his client's bail conditions so he could return to work, but the issue was remanded off for it to be discussed with the officer in charge of the case. Police opposed the idea in court.
