Hamilton man Paora Langley, 19, has been charged with the murder of 38-year-old Sedrick Tilley Tiatia in Hamilton earlier this week.
An emotional Langley, appeared in the Hamilton District Court yesterday, supported by 15 family and friends in the public gallery.
Langley listed his occupation as labourer.
He lived at the address where the murder took place. He did not enter a plea and did not apply for name suppression.
Langley was denied bail and he was remanded in custody until his next appearance.
The maximum penalty for murder is life imprisonment.
While standing in the dock Langley tearfully mouthed the words "I love you" to his supporters.
After the two-minute hearing, family in the gallery yelled to Langley as he was being led away by police, "love you cuz" (sic), "be strong" and "Black Power MC, MC, MC." Yesterday's court appearance comes after Langley handed himself into Counties Manukau police on Wednesday afternoon.
Mr Tiatia died at the Winstone Ave house in Chartwell on Tuesday afternoon after suffering significant injuries.
Langley is due to appear at the igh Court in Hamilton on February 25.
