A Tokoroa couple were attacked by a group of people as they walked home from a party last night.
The attack left a man with critical head injuries and a woman with lacerations to her arm.
Detective Constable Roger Whale said the attacked happened about 11pm on Waitangi Day.
He said the couple, in their late thirties, were walking home from a party in the Pentland Terrace area when they were set upon by a group of people.
The woman managed to flee the attackers, but became separated from her partner. She managed to get to Tokoroa Hospital where she was treated for an arm laceration.
Meanwhile her partner was found lying at the corner of Belmont St and Maraetai Road unconscious by a passer-by and taken to Tokoroa Hospital.
He was diagnosed as having significant head injuries, a broken arm and a broken leg was flown to Waikato Hospital where his condition remains critical.
Police would like to speak with the person who took the man to hospital as well as other possible witnesses to the attack.
