Taumarunui's Turaki School has told parents in a letter home that a former staff member is facing criminal charges.

The Waikato Times reported yesterday that David Ballantyne, a former teacher at the school, was facing four charges of indecent assault from 2000 to 2013, when he was a church youth group leader.

The alleged offending took place in Hamilton and Morrinsville - not at the school - but the school board of trustees was criticised for not telling parents earlier.

On Tuesday, a letter was sent home with children in a sealed envelope, telling parents that Ballantyne had appeared in court, but that the charges did not relate to Turaki School or the area.

The board did not outline the charges.
