A Hamilton woman who received several strange calls from her husband was amazed to arrive home and find they had won $100,000 worth of Bonus Bonds.
"He called me and asked if I'd like to retire soon, then later said I need to be home by 6pm or I might miss something," the winner, who has chosen to remain anonymous, said.
"I had no idea what he was talking about, so when I got home to find a lady from the bank pouring champagne while announcing we'd just won $100,000, I was completely blown away. I don't know how he managed to keep it a secret for so long."
The pair plan to keep a portion of their prize in Bonus Bonds, as well as spend a bit on travel and visiting family overseas.
"I really enjoy my job so hadn't previously considered retirement but having a win like this does give us options. My husband recently retired, so it's nice to feel like we have a good buffer."
To date the youngest Bonus Bond holder to win $1 million was just seven years old and the oldest was 87.
