Diversions are in place on SH1 in Kinleath after a serious accident which is reported to have left one person dead.

Ambulance officers were called to a motor vehicle accident involving a car and a truck about 8.45pm, ambulance northern communications team leader Leah Grave said.

One person died at the scene and no other patients were transported, she said.

Police established diversions on both sides of the "serious motor vehicle collision", northern communications inspector Tony Edwards said. One diversion is at the intersection of State Highway 1 and State Highway 30, and the other at State Highway 1 and Kinleith Road.

They recommended northbound traffic divert to State Highway 5 via Rotorua, and the recommended route south is via State Highway 32.

The crash will be investigated by the Serious Crash Unit.
