A teenager has drowned in the Waikato River near Taupo's Riverside Park.
The 17-year-old was swimming with a friend this afternoon when he dived into the river, surfaced for a while, then disappeared, Taupo Sergeant Shane McNally said.
Police were called about 4.15pm and found his body after a half-hour search involving Harbourmaster and Coastguard personnel.
His body is to be retrieved tonight by the police national dive squad.
Mr McNally said police were alerted soon after the teenager got into difficulty.
"There was a group of people down there and he was swimming with a friend," Mr McNally said.
"People were watching him in trouble and they called the police."
Police and Victim Support were supporting his friends and family, he said.
