An elderly Waitoa man has been charged after the car he was driving crashed, allegedly causing the death of his passenger wife last year.

Brian Winston Randall, 73, faces one charge of careless driving causing the death of Patricia Winston Randall on State Highway 26 between Eureka and Morrinsville on September 25, last year.

Mrs Randall, 68, died of her injuries five days later in Waikato Hospital.

Mr Randall was also seriously injured and spent some time in the hospital's high dependency unit.

Mr Randall was driving the car which allegedly left the road after a corner and hit a tree and fence posts.

It's understood the pair were returning to their home in Morrinsville from Hamilton at the time of the crash.

Randall is set to appear in the Waitakere District Court next month.
