Firefighters put out a shed and bush fire that threatened to spread to neighbouring buildings.

A scrub fire in a Hamilton industrial area set a shed alight and threatened to spread to nearby buildings.

The Hamilton fire service was called to Mexted Place in Riverlea just after 2pm on Thursday.

Waikato District fire commander Roy Breeze said firefighters had to cut off flames before they spread.

"The guys had to cut it off in a number of areas to protect other sheds," said Mr Breeze.

The fire was in an area of grass about 50 x 60 metres in size, surrounding a shed.

"It was actually a shed fire and a bit of a scrub fire together," he said. "It was a scrub fire that was endangering other sheds and properties."

Mr Breeze said four fire engines were called to the scene and remained until the site was safe.

"To actually extinguish it will probably take a couple of hours," he said.
