A man who was seriously injured when he fell six metres while abseiling in the Coromandel, was part of a recreational group of four doing an independent climb.

Russell Hodgson a tour guide for Canyonz, a tour agency that takes clients on canyoning trips around the north island, said he saw the group while he was out with clients at Kauaeranga Valley near Thames yesterday.

''They were definitely a recreational group, they weren't with any tour group,'' he said.

''Our tour group were a few climbs behind them when the accident happened.''

Mr Hodgson said that he helped the remaining three recreational climbers out of valley. Mr Hodgson believed the men were from the Auckland region.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to the scene about 7.45pm after the man suffered various injuries in the fall.He was winched to safety and airlifted to Auckland City Hospital in a serious condition.
