Prime Minister John key gets more than the traditional politician-to-baby kiss from six-month-old Harrison Burns in Hamilton this morning. Harrison, who lives in the proposed zone for the new school, gave the PM a taste of the sort of vice-like grip Mr Key has himself been putting on embattled minister Judith Collins during a photo shoot at the site.

Prime Minister John Key was in Hamilton today at a ceremony marking the start of construction of Hamilton's newest primary school on Endeavour Avenue in the city's north east.

John Key was handed the spade after a welcome and site blessing from kaumatua from Ngati Wairere of Tauhei and Hukanui.

"It's great to be here at the first step for the Endeavour School," Mr Key said."Youngsters ... are going to enjoy what will be a fabulous school here in Hamilton."

The construction of the new school also reflected the strength and growth in the city, he said.

Diggers and construction vehicles were already in place for earthworks to begin at the Endeavour Avenue Primary School, which is due to open in January 2015. The school will initially have the capacity for 400 pupils and build up to 600.

Further facilities are expected to be built during this process, Hamilton East MP David Bennett said. The budget for the entire project is around $16m.

Today's ceremony attracted a crowd of dozens, including a group of Montessori at Flagstaff pupils and local families and community members.
