Otorohanga's colourful former mayor has made an early return from overseas travel, prompting speculation in the town that he may have plans to stand for the National party at the next election.
The Waikato Times received an anonymous tip that Dale Williams would be standing in the National stronghold of Taranaki-King Country.
But Mr Williams was unable to say if he was involved or to what level.
Mr Williams served three terms as Otorohanga's mayor and left after last year's local body elections to travel.
He said a decision on National's candidate for Taranaki-King Country would be announced in a matter of weeks.
The present MP for Taranaki-King Country is National's Shane Ardern who is standing down at the election.
