The man police believe killed an Auckland homeless man Maqbool Hussain has been caught in Taupo.
Police released the name and photo of Justin Vance Turner, 28, as a "person of interest" four days ago and yesterday confirmed he was wanted for murder.
Turner had been known to frequent Balmoral - where 49-year-old Hussain was found dead at the back of a vacant grocery store on Monday last week, police said.
This afternoon, the fugitive - who had been sighted in the Wairarapa at the weekend - was seen by members of the public "acting suspiciously" near Taupo wharf.
They alerted police and officers made the arrest, a spokeswoman said.
Turner was previously described by police as "dangerous" and people were warned not to approach him.
He had recently breached bail and prison-release conditions.
Members of the Operation Gridley homicide investigation team would travel to Taupo today to interview Turner. It's not known how long he had been there or how he got there.
Detective Inspector Chris Cahill said locating Turner was a welcome breakthrough for his team. It had been working solidly since Hussain's body was found in his Balmoral sleepout.
"As with all such investigations, this is just another step in a process so we won't be slowing down but it is good to know that Mr Turner is in custody," Cahill said.
"We have a lot more work to do on the investigation so anyone who has information should share it with us."
It was not known when Turner would appear in court.
