It is thought a medical condition caused a young woman to drive through the window of the north Waikato cafe last night.

The car went through the window of the Hopin Stopin cafe on Great North Rd in Taupiri, around 25 kilometres north of Hamilton, at around 6.15pm.

Local police said the car hit a power pole before crashing into the front of the shop after the young local driver suffered a seizure.

She was taken to Waikato Hospital with minor injuries but police have said she left before being treated.

A young staff member who was inside the cafe at the time was treated for shock after she narrowly avoided being hit by the car.

Other staff said she was sitting in front of the main shop window when she saw the car hit the power pole. She was then able to quickly jump out of the way, avoiding serious injury, they said.

Police are now investigating and said there has been no decision on whether the driver will be charged.

The popular cafe was closed today, but it is expected to be open again tomorrow.
