No plea for fatal three-vehicle crash

The Hamilton man facing charges over a horror three-vehicle smash that killed a Levin woman and son in January is yet to enter a plea.

Donald Brendan John Newman, 43, made a brief appearance before a registrar in the Palmerston North District Court this morning.

Charged with two counts of careless driving causing death, he entered no pleas and was remanded until later this month.

The two charges came about after he was involved in a crash near Sanson in the early hours of January 8.

Levin woman Margaret Joan Turnbull, 51, and her son Trent Cole Whitburn, 20, died in the crash.

They were heading south on State Highway One in a Nissan car, travelling behind a Big Chill truck when a Freight Lines-contracted truck approached from behind.

A collision took place, and a large fire broke out.

The Nissan and Big Chill truck were going slowly behind a 110-tonne catamaran, which was being transported in two parts from Palmerston North to Foxton along State Highway One.
