McLennan sure smear page author is really Wanda Lee
Wanda Lee is a real person and has finally spoken, sort of.
The mysterious Wanda contacted the Waikato Times after the newspaper published a story confirming city council candidate Steve McLennan was the author of a smear page that "Wanda Lee" had been circulating online.
However, Mr McLennan rejected claims by the target of his writing, Ewan Wilson, that he was also posing as Wanda Lee to anonymously post links to his ‘Ewan Wilson - The Unauthorised Biography' on candidate web pages.
Now, the "real" Wanda Lee has told the Times, in a private message from her Facebook profile, that she has done nothing worthy of media coverage.
She did not respond to a request that she call to confirm her identity.
Wanda Lee was created on Facebook on Friday last week, and since then has been fixated almost entirely on the Hamilton City Council election race.
But Mr McLennan, who said he was also contacted by Wanda Lee yesterday, is certain she is real, and not a creation of his group or their supporters.
He said an upset Wanda has contacted the New Council-New Direction's Facebook administrator, apologising for causing any unwanted attention.
Mr McLennan said while he could see "how that got your bull**** antennae twitching" he was now completely convinced Wanda Lee was a real person.
He said her Facebook message showed she was horrified by the attention.
"Sorry guys for giving the Waikato Times a reason to pick at you. I saw the article this morning on Stuff. I am not a Ewan Wilson fan. I can't stand him, and when I found [McLennan's] page telling people all about his past, I noticed it had a very small following so I wanted to get the information out to people before more people voted."
"That to me sounds like a genuine person who's upset," said Mr McLennan.
He said he had quickly messaged Wanda Lee back saying the best thing she could do would be to "come out" and prove that she was an actual person.
"This is not me, it's not Garry [Mallett]," he said. "It's going to be embarrassing if it's a supporter, but to me this reads like an innocent person in a media storm."
