People are being warned not to take shellfish or swim in parts of Coromandel Harbour after a leak was discovered at the Coromandel wastewater plant.
The leak, which has been fixed, was found after Thames-Coromandel District Council was alerted to discolouration of an area of Whangarahi Stream near the plant.
Investigations by council staff found two broken pipes which had been leaking partially treated wastewater into the stream.
The council said it was thought the leaks were caused during routine maintenance at the plant in July.
The council estimated between 10,000 and 15,000 cubic metres of partially treated wastewater may have leaked into the stream over a five-week period. Hauraki Herald
