A large truck has lost an 11 tonne load near Lake Taupo blocking both lanes on State Highway 1.

The highway is blocked in both directions near Bulli Point, about 25 kilometres south of Taupo township.

The accident happened about 2.45pm and police are working to divert traffic to State Highway 32 along the western bays access.

A crane will be needed to lift the load off the road.

It is not known what the truck was carrying.
