Max Christoffersen (Faith should be respected and purely personal, Opinion, Jan 23), makes some very good points in his comment on faith and hypocrisy, especially those relating to employer expectations.

The most glaring example which comes to my mind is the supplication offered at the start of question time in Parliament.

The Speaker, quite sincerely I believe, begins "Almighty God" on behalf of the mostly uninterested individuals assembled in the chamber.

Often, what follows suggests that God has had very little influence on the proceedings or the members gathered. So why bother?

At the swearing-in of these esteemed representatives, each makes an oath of loyalty to the Queen and her heirs.

The very next day half of them are conspiring to get rid of her, so of what value is their oath? Answer: zilch. At least Hone Harawira shows some honesty here. With power more important than principle, and having got rid of the treason act perhaps it's time to accept ourselves as the nation we have become.
