Silverdale residents are not in favour of the proposed industrial container port in residential educational area.
Recently there was a leaflet drop opposing the 800-hectare inland port and industrial project opposite the following: Residential houses, University of Waikato Orchard Road students residential village, university library, Toko Mapihi Maurea Kura Kaupapa Maori children's school, university tennis courts, Niwa, Landcare Research, Management School lecture theatres etc. It is also close to Hillcrest High School and Silverdale Normal School.
It is not a good idea to set up heavy or light industries and container port opposite the above establishments and a quite respectable residential area.
We have a Member of Parliament representing Silverdale and Hamilton City Council members representing Hamilton East, they should speak up on behalf of the community, before the community organises a mass protest meeting at the university to oppose the project.
The community will accept a smaller shopping centre similar to the base with Silverdale Rd, Ruakura Rd and new Highway access which will also receive support from the Student Job Search.
Tainui Holdings has a better understanding of the needs of the community, as such they should reconsider their decision and move the proposed industrial area away from the residential educational area.
