Today's news that the Government has blown $216 million planning roads that will not be built is a disgrace. This present Government has spent $216 million on the design stage of its Roads of National Significance (and that's only five of the proposed roads). Most of this money has gone to private contractors, nearly a quarter of a million dollars for investigation and design. In fact, a million dollars a metre to plan for roads we do not need.
No wonder we're getting further into debt under this Government.
If that $216 million had been spent on KiwiRail then 200 hundred vital jobs would not have been lost, which added to the already record number of unemployed we have under this Government. Plus we would have contributed to a more efficient and vital rail service.
