Knights secure outright win against Central
The Northern Knights overcame some stubborn late resistance to gain an outright win over the Central Stags in Hamilton today.
Chasing 99 for victory at Seddon Park in their second innings, the Knights reached 99-3 to achieve victory with a day and seven wickets to spare.
After rain delayed today's start until 1pm, the Stags resumed on 169-8, still 29 runs away from making the Knights bat again on day three of the four-day encounter after having to follow-on yesterday.
But a dogged partnership between wicketkeeper-batsman Kruger van Wyk and No 10 Ben Wheeler ensured the hosts would have to pad up a second time.
They then proved to be more than nuisance value, eventually putting on 102 for the ninth wicket before the introduction of Scott Kuggeleijn to the attack brought about van Wyk's downfall.
The former test keeper made 95 off 146 balls, while Wheeler notched his highest first-class score and finished unbeaten on 81, compiled from just 103 deliveries and featuring 15 fours and a six as the Stags were eventually dismissed for 296.
The Knights picked up 17 points for the win (12 outright, four first-innings bowling points and one batting) to climb to second spot on the Plunket Shield points table with 23 from two matches, while the Stags (four first-innings bowling points) are bottom with nine.
