WaiBop United pushed the defending champs hard but got no reward as they went down 3-0 to Waitakere United at Fred Taylor Park today.

The result was in doubt until the 77th minute when Sam French netted his and Waitakere's second of the ASB Premiership clash.

Substitute Jarrod Young completed the scoring with three minutes of normal time left to push the hosts to the top of the table, although they have played two more matches than unbeaten title favourites Auckland City.

The visitors made most of the running in the first half and came agonisingly close to taking the lead in the 10th minute when striker Jack McNab's left-foot snap-shot hit the post and bounced clear with Waitakere goalkeeper Danny Robinson beaten.

However, Waitakere went in front two minutes later when Dylan Stansfield got away down the right and his cross was neatly nodded home by Sam French.

That goal was all that separated the sides as WaiBop pushed hard for an equaliser but got little joy from the Waitakere central defensive duo of Brian Shelley and Tim Myers.

French punished a WaiBop mistake by blasting a shot past goalkeeper Andy McNeil and Young drilled in his late chance to slightly flatter the hosts.
