Auckland City see off WaiBop United
WaiBop United produced another spirited effort but couldn't stop Auckland City from scoring a 2-0 win in Cambridge today.
The victory wasn't assured until substitute Darren White netted the visitors' second in the 91st minute, but WaiBop only rarely threatened the goal of the ASB Premiership title favourites at John Kerkhof Park.
However, the underdogs did frustrate Auckland for most of the encounter through a disciplined approach and excellent displays from goalkeeper Andy McNeil and young defender Tom Probert.
Auckland went ahead in the 39th minute when Emiliano Tade's free-kick from the left snuck past McNeil with the possible aid of a slight deflection from WaiBop defender Tyler Lissette.
That led to further pressure on the home side's goal before the break but neither side created a lot in the second spell until WaiBop coach Peter Smith elected to play three at the back in the latter stages while employing all three substitutes as the hosts chased an equaliser.
That gave Auckland some space to push forward and White sealed the affair in added-time when converting a low cross from Takuya Iwata.
Auckland's win kept them on top of the table while WaiBop remain sixth in the eight-team competition.
