Cricket stars Brendon McCullum and Kyle Mills were keen observers at the opening session of the Karaka yearling sales today.

The pair inspected yearlings and talked racing with Waikato Stud's Mark Chittick before entering the auditorium and watched the early stages of selling.

Prime Minister John Key spent much of the first hour of selling sitting with leading buyer David Ellis.

The pair engaged in animated discussion while the Te Akau Racing boss was an active buyer, securing a Fastnet Rock colt for $250,000 from the draft of Hamilton's Curraghmore Stud.
