So this is what Liam Messam gets up to in his time away from rugby.

After a hectic season with the All Blacks, the loose forward doesn't arrive back at Chiefs training until next month, but in the meantime has found himself running the streets of Hamilton and picking up the neighbourhood rubbish bags.

The 29-year-old and his younger brother came off the bench to take to the Waste Management truck on Boxing Day after former team-mate Keith Lowen went down with injury

.Messam posted this on his Twitter account: ''When the big boss aka Sumo goes down, who u gonna call, Team Messam lol. Me and the lil bro earning our Xmas dinner''.

Lowen was cut by a piece of glass, leaving the one-test All Black with a nasty, deep gash on his leg.

While helping to keep the city looking beautiful, the work is also good fitness training for Messam.

He would be lifting between 12 and 15 tonnes a day and was also helping Lowen in the week leading up to Christmas.
