Chiefs captain Liam Messam will start on the bench against the Rebels in Hamilton this weekend, as coach Dave Rennie makes eight changes to his starting lineup.

Tanirau Latimer returns to the side in Messam's number six jersey, while Sam Cane plays seven and Kane Thompson comes into the side at number eight.

Brodie Retallick will take over the captaincy for the match.

Jamie Mackintosh and lock Michael Fitzgerald also return to the forwards, while Bundee Aki will make his return from injury, starting at second five-eighth.

Mils Muliaina moves to the left wing with Tom Marshall in at fullback, while Gareth Anscombe starts at first five in place of injured Aaron Cruden.Jordan Payne will get the opportunity to make his Chiefs debut off the bench.
