Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic netballers Julianna Naoupu and Elias Shadrock have missed the cut for the Silver Ferns squad for next month’s Constellation Cup series against Australia.

The pair were a decent chance to make the 12-strong group following last week’s trial in Auckland which involved 25 players.

Instead, Ferns coach Waimarama Taumaunu, naming the first squad of her tenure, chose a midcourt bolter in 23-year-old Bailey Mes from the Northern Mystics and went for the Southern Steel’s Jodi Brown as the fourth shooting option.

Four Magic players have been named in the squad – Casey Williams retains the captaincy, with Laura Langman her deputy, while Leana de Bruin and Irene van Dyk are also there.

Naoupu was one of four players named in an extended 16-strong Silver Ferns squad, with those players set to possibly feature later in the year in the Quad Nations.

Shadrock is one of four players named in the National Accelerant Squad.

Can the Magic win the final this year?

Absolutely. One word: Irene.

My heart says yes but it's been a tough season.

I'd have to say no. Other teams too strong.
