The New Zealand sevens team reached the semifinals at the opener tournament of the IRB World Sevens Series with a 17-14 win over Kenya tonight.

The Gordon Tietjens-coached side, which cruised to pool play wins over Portugal, France and Argentina on day one in Dubai, led 12-0 at halftime against Kenya and held on in the second half to set up a final four meeting with old nemesis Fiji, who accounted for South Africa 17-5 in the quarters.

The semifinal is scheduled for 3.30am Sunday (NZ time), with the other semifinal, featuring England and Samoa, to follow. England defeated Argentina 17-12 and Samoa won a nail-biter against Australia 28-27.
