One of the biggest racing crowds in recent memory was on hand to witness Cambridge galloper More Than Sacred claim Saturday's Waikato Times Gold Cup at Te Rapa. Racegoers of all ages packed the Hamilton racecourse, with Waikato Racing Club general manager Ken Rutherford yesterday reporting crowd numbers had reached 10,000.

Mr Rutherford praised racegoers for their conduct, with no problems of any note reported.

"Tremendous crowd and we're rapt with how the day went off," Mr Rutherford said.

"The crowd was well behaved which was good, and the feedback we received was that overwhelmingly everyone had a great time and they'd be back again next year.

"Our turnover was slightly down on last year, which was a bit of a surprise, but there were a couple of big-priced winners in the middle of the day, which wouldn't have helped that.

"Overall though, we're really pleased. Waikato Times Gold Cup day continues to be known as Waikato's iconic racing party."
