Three Waikato girls are gearing up for a week in Fiji during their school holidays, but they will pack their football boots with their sunscreen and togs.
The Hillcrest High School year 10 duo of Tayla Christensen and Emily Hanrahan, as well as year 11 Hamilton Girls' High School student Roberta Wigelsworth, have been selected for the New Zealand under-16 team for an Oceania tournament in December.
After impressing at last month's New Zealand secondary school tournament, the trio made the 18-strong squad, which was chosen with an eye to the 2014 under-17 world cup, with all players eligible for that tournament.
The competition in Fiji runs from December 9 till 15 and will feature some Australian state teams, as well as countries from the Pacific.
Christensen played at last month's under-17 world cup in Azerbaijan, while Hanrahan and Wigelsworth were part of preparations with the wider squad.
While the trio all play for their respective school first XIs, they also play club football - Christensen for Melville and Wigelsworth and Hanrahan for Claudelands Rovers.
In the leadup to the tournament in Fiji, Hanrahan is having a break, while Wigelsworth and Christensen play each Sunday in a summer Northern League competition for a youth team of under-17 world cup players.
