The details: 

- Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur has crashed near Donetsk, killing 298 people. Read the full story here. See video footage of the crash site here.

- A New Zealand woman is confirmed among the dead. Another woman with a British passport, who lived in New Zealand, also died. 

- The death toll includes 173 Dutch, 44 Malaysians and 28 Australians. Two Britons were travelling to  New Zealand to watch their football team, Newcastle United, play.

- The jet was shot down, reportedly by missile, and Ukraine officials claim it has evidence pro-Russian separatists are to blame. Russian President Vladimir Putin has blamed Ukraine for the disaster.

- The prime suspect is Igor Girkin, a former Russian intelligence officer.

- Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has demanded swift justice for those responsible.

- Reports of the victims are emerging on social media.
